Whether remote work is, on balance, a perk or a problem is something remote workers like me often question. So, too, do employ- ers, though we frequently seem to land on opposite sides of this polarizing issue. While I’ve been working from my home office some 800 kilometers from my company’s Washington, D.C., headquarters, many institutions, including the federal government, have been is- suing return-to-office mandates. Social scientists have waded into the issue. Research on remote work and hybrid work — in which the week is split between working from home and the office — is still nascent, and signals point in many directions.
