‘TWO OF US’ is, perhaps, the last great duet of The Beatles’ career. The opening number on their final album, Let It Be, it finds Paul McCartney (who wrote it) and John Lennon’s voices entwined to gorgeous effect on a song that is mainly about McCartney’s wife Linda while also being about Lennon and McCartney. “You and me chasing paper/ Getting nowhere” could be about how financial squabbles warped their relationship. In the end, though, there’s genuine warmth. “You and I have memories/ Longer than the road that stretches out ahead,” they sing, in celebration of a long and fruitful friendship. Fifty-six years later, another great creative partnership put that song near the end of their new movie. …
