SpaceX is preparing to move beyond filling cellular dead zones and become a mobile carrier in its own right. The company intends to combine its expanding satellite constellation with terrestrial base stations, creating a network capable of competing directly with Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. If its timetable holds, the first version could arrive by the end of 2027. The plan represents a significant change in Starlink’s role. Its mobile service has largely been presented as an extension of conventional cellular coverage, allowing ordinary phones to connect to satellites when towers are unavailable.
