A transcription factor may enable high-yield rice plants to use nitrogen more efficiently Mao Suganami and Makoto Matsuoka P lants optimize growth between roots and shoots by adjusting the root-to-shoot biomass ratio in response to nitrogen availability. Although this whole-plant response has been observed for over a century (1), the molecular mechanisms under- lying its regulation have long remained elusive. Recent studies in rice have begun to uncover some of the details. On page 937 of this issue, Shen et al. (2) identify the tran- scription factor OsWRI1a (Oryza sativa WRINKLED1a) as a key regulator in rice that coordinates responses to external nitrogen. …
