Engineered pluripotent stem cells form somatic and germ cells that mimic a functional testis Rod T. Mitchell1,2 M ammalian fertility depends on the generation of healthy eggs and sperm from primordial germ cells that are specified in early development (1). In males, this results in sperm that bear little resemblance to their cell of ori- gin. Germ cells require interaction with specialized so- matic cells that support their differentiation into sperm. Sertoli cells lie close to germ cells within the seminiferous tubules, whereas Leydig cells are located in the surrounding interstitium.
