Global biodiversity is deteriorating at an unprecedented rate in human history (1). The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework’s Action Objective 3 mandates restoring and conserving 30% of land and seas by 2030 (2). The Third Pole, a highly fragile and sensitive region for biodiversity conservation that includes the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau and its surrounding mountains, is the source of nine major Asian rivers and provides ecosystem services to 1.5 billion people (3, 4). Through coordinated efforts, scientific com- munities and national governments have worked toward conserving the Third Pole (3, 4), with some success (3). However, to maximize the impact of these top-down conservation efforts, national govern- ments and the global scientific community should recognize and support community-based biocultural stewardship (5). …
