An unrelenting Everglades advocate, a clever wartime spider farmer, and a resourceful Peruvian potato hunter are among the cast of real-life science figures whose stories are told in the titles in this year’s children’s book roundup. They are joined by—among others—a group of unruly undergraduates whose fraternity stunt forged a new, nonstandard, unit of measurement. The books in this year’s roundup represent some of the titles that appear on the latest of two lists prepared annually by the National Science Teaching Association and the Children’s Book Council—the “Best STEM Books K–12” list and the “Out- standing Science Trade Books for Students K–12” list—which, together, point readers toward outstanding science books for children and young adults. …
