Self-amplifying RNA improves heart function after myocardial infarction in mice and pigs Lien Ervijn1 and Niek N. Sanders1,2 T he human body contains more than 100,000 types of pro- teins that catalyze biochemical reactions, transport mole- cules or ions, signal messages, provide structural support, and repair damaged tissue. Many diseases are character- ized by protein dysfunction, and therapy with specific proteins or peptides may facilitate recovery or alleviate symptoms. Although some of these proteins work extracellularly or at the cell surface, many require intracellular delivery to function. Further- more, repeated or high doses are often necessary because the body quickly eliminates the administered peptides and proteins, which are costly to manufacture.
