Grootaert and Aernout Luttun A dipose tissue, the body’s largest endocrine organ, is a major regulator of cardiovascular health. In humans, white adipose tissue stores fat and is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. By contrast, brown adipose tissue produces heat by burning fat and is linked to a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease (1). Perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) surrounds blood vessels and has features of both white and brown adipose tissue.
