The US$1.3 trillion annual climate finance pledge sealed at the 2025 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belém, Brazil aims to shield vulnerable communities from climate impacts (1). However, this hard-won agreement overlooks the threat of contami- nation by the failure of mining waste containment structures known as tailings dams (2). Many tailings dams are located upstream of Indigenous territories, farmlands, and biodiversity hotspots, and they are increasingly destabilized by climate extremes. Without systematic monitoring or coordinated governance, mining waste could enter ecosystems and erase hard-won adaptation gains. Many tailings dams are several decades old and were built accord- ing to historical engineering design standards that are ineffective in current conditions. …
