Seismic data reveal the trajectory and break-up of space debris in Earth’s atmosphere Chris Carr A t 1:40 a.m. local time on 2 April 2024, fireballs burned across the Southern California sky as the orbital module from the Shenzhou-15 spacecraft reentered the atmosphere and dis- integrated . The point of entry was thousands of kilometers southwest of the anticipated location, the northern Atlan- tic Ocean, which was indicated by impact prediction messages a few hours before the observation. Uncontrolled reentry of space debris is becoming more frequent because of the increased number of satellites in low-Earth orbit (160 to 2000 km above Earth’s surface). …
