From the window, she could see the edge of a bank of thunderclouds rising vigorously in the narrow sky. The tin roof of the neighboring pachinko parlor cast its reflection on the ceiling of the second-floor room where she lay. It wasn’t the standard noise of a factory or something similar, but an irregular, irritating sound that constantly set her nerves on edge. On weekdays it wasn’t so bad, but the din became much more intrusive on Sunday afternoons. Kikuko found the noise from next door especially unbearable in summer. …
